“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

Socialist Party presidential candidate Norman Thomas

If you're an establishment republican, here's what you must accept in your party

It is being reported that the establishment wing of the GOP has maybe 700 delegates who're willing to defect in Cleveland and participate in a coup to depose Trump as the nominee. I guess establishment-minded GOP voters like George Will and Bill Crystal have a plan as to who to nominate in his place.

Bush, Huckabee, Carson? Good Lord don't let it be Romney! The argument among Trump haters is that at least establishment republicans are a known quantity and can be relied on for certain things. I agree, but not like you think.....

Establishment republicans are known and can be relied on to.......

-not change the tax code one iota because it would mean less money for them to buy votes, just like democrats,

-to do nothing about illegal immigration,

-to continue to increase the size and reach of government,

-to accept the man-made global warming hoax as a basis for federal policy,

-to not audit the Fed and make everything they do transparent,

-to not put education loans back in the private sector and to not allow full, unfettered competition among insurance carriers anywhere they'd like to operate in the US.

-to do nothing to get manufacturing back in the US, such as slash the out-of-control regulatory apparatus,

-to do nothing to stem the tide of unassimilable, Syrian, welfare colonists streaming into the country, for reasons of political correctness,

-and basically to do nothing that amounts to more than kabuki-theater posturing for voters back home, but keeps them and their Marie-Antoinette wives on the A-list cocktail circuit in DC.

That's the modern GOP, and it stinks.

You have described pretty much all career politicians (and bureaucrats) with a few un-electable exceptions such as Gary Johnson and Ron Paul. That is one reason (among many) that I do not vote in any election for any office.

I'd like to see the Libertarian party make a legitimate run so I could seriously get behind that candidate. I think maybe it'll end up being a Libertarian-type candidate running as an independent who goes the farthest.

People are sick of the two party system....at least those not part of the two-party system.

We have a one-party system masquerading as a two-party system.

David, I think you are absolutely correct about that.

Don't hold your breath, Ed. Even the best of candidates would be co-opted by the establishment and very quickly end up a part of the "system". If not, he (or she) would be marginalized by that same system. Hell, the system marginalized Ron Paul, the best candidate to ever run for POTUS, without even breaking a sweat.

I think you are probably right, Isaac. The political destiny of a democratic nation, even our representative republic, is a one-way ratchet toward a plutarchy/oligarchy. We have the same people in charge of the government, the money supply, the military, the regulatory apparatus, etc., and very little changes from one decade to the next except that government gets bigger and more over-reaching, while the states and individuals shrink in comparison.
